Caesars Virginia Opens A Temporary Casino May 15

Caesars Virginia will open its temporary casino in Danville, Virginia on May 15, 2023. The 40,000-square-foot temporary casino will be open 24-7, with around 500 slot machines, 20 table games, and a sportsbook. The temporary casino will be located at the former Dan River Mills complex on West Main Street. The news was announced just days ago, following a meeting with the Virginia Lottery Board, who granted the request to open a temporary location. It sure doesn’t look like a casino on the outside, but it’s temporary!

Doesn’t look like much on the outside, does it?

The temporary casino will be quite close to the location of the permanent resort. As we previously reported, Caesars is plowing hundreds of millions of dollars into the project. Upon completion, the resort will have hundreds of hotel rooms adjacent to a casino with 1,000 slot machines, 50 table games, and a sportsbook. They resort will also host restaurants and an entertainment venue. Construction is ongoing, and the latest estimate of the grand opening is late 2024. So, Caesars Virginia is going the same route of its rival, Hard Rock Casinos. They’re building a casino and resort in Bristol, Virginia, near the Tennessee border. They’ve had a temporary casino up and running since last July. According to monthly data provided to the Lottery Board, business is going great.

These temporary casinos won’t have all the luxurious trappings of more established locations, like Harrah’s in Cherokee, NC – yet. The race is on to capture the gaming dollars of a large portion of the Southeastern U.S. population that to date has had precious few gaming options. All that is about to change!

Inside the Temporary Casino

Inside the inconspicuous looking structure just across the way from the resort under construction, you’ll be surprised to find an actual working casino. The 40,000-square-foot area has around 700 slot machines, 50 electronic and live table games, and a restaurant serving American fare and beer, wine and cocktails. So, you’ve got everything you need in here, and Caesars really has made an attempt to give this the casino feel.

“The biggest comment I heard was ‘it looks a lot different on the inside than it does on the outside,’” said Chris Albrecht, General Manager for Caesars Virginia in an interview with local news. “We spent a lot of time, energy and effort to make sure this felt like a fantastic casino that you would be proud of. We put a lot of detail into making this experience very strong, even though we know we’re in a temporary operation.”

Caesars is hoping this effort pays off, because they have a long way to go before the resort is ready in late 2024. In the meantime, this will have to do.
